Recognizing PMHNs - National Nurses Week 2023

It's time to break out the confetti and cupcakes because National Nurses Week 2023 is here! From May 6 to May 12, it's time to celebrate the unsung heroes of healthcare who continue to make a difference in patient's lives every day.

125 years ago, the American Nurses Association (ANA) officially recognized this week, honoring the dedicated professionals who are the backbone of our healthcare system. Among them are the incredible Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses (PMHNs), who are registered nurses with specialized training that help address and monitor mental health and behavioral conditions.

The American Psychiatric Nursing Association defines Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses (PMHNs) as identifying mental health issues, preventing mental health problems, and the care and treatment of persons with psychiatric disorders.

PMHNs work with a diverse clientele, including individuals, families, and communities, in various settings, from hospitals to community mental health centers. They are second only to psychiatrists in terms of the US's biggest group of behavioral health professionals. PMHNs and Behavioral Health Registered Nurses (RNs) provide a full range of mental health care across the treatment lifespan. These professionals assess, diagnose, and treat individuals and families who have psychiatric and/or substance disorders. They also help those at risk to prevent the development of disorders.

Their consumers include ages ranging from children to seniors, people with substance use disorders, and those with eating disorders. These practitioners are the US's second largest group of behavioral health professionals. Work settings for PMHNs include:

  • Inpatient or outpatient general and psychiatric hospitals
  • Behavioral care companies
  • Clinics and general practitioner’s offices
  • Assisted living facilities
  • Long-term care communities
  • Rehabilitation centers
  • Private homes
  • Prisons
  • Community mental health centers
  • Local, state, and federal mental health agencies
  • Military clinics or hospitals

Let's not forget about finding ways to help PMHNs help their patients even better. Administrative tasks often distract from the care offered, but any help that eases this burden offers essential support. It's all about going the extra mile to show these nurses that we recognize their significant contributions to our healthcare system and society as a whole. Let's celebrate National Nurses Week 2023 with full hearts and endless gratitude!

So how can you help celebrate Nurse Appreciation Week and show some love to these incredible individuals?
